Do you struggle with drinking more water daily to stay hydrated? I’m right there with you! We all know hydration is crucial for our bodies to keep running but we don’t always prioritize water as a daily task. Up to 60% of the human body is already water so staying hydrated allows our bodies to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, and keep the lights on so that our organs can run properly. Staying hydrated can also improve your mood, sleep quality, and ability to learn new things. If you struggle with drinking water daily try these 10 hacks to drink more water and stay hydrated.
1. Spice it up with a flavor enhancer to stay hydrated when you hate water
True Lemon
Adding a flavor enhancer to your water is one of my favorite ways to drink more water (even if you hate it). My favorite water enhancer is by True Lemon. This is a water enhancer that is only 10 calories, 1 gram of sugar, and has no artificial sweeteners or preservatives. My favorite flavors from their sweetened line are: True Lemon Original Lemonade, True Lemon Strawberry Lemonade, and True Lime Original Limeade. For an unsweetened option I am enjoying their True Lime (Crystallized Lime) products which are 0 calories, 0 sugars and mimic the taste of a fresh squeezed lime wedge with no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

GoJHydrate
I recently started using a water enhancer called GoHydrate as way to stay hydrated and drink more water this summer. GoHydrate comes in individual packets which make them great for on-the-go and travel. GoHydrate provides almost instant hydration by delivering 5 electrolytes immediately to your body. Those electrolytes are: calcium, sodium, magnesium, phosphorous, and potassium. This water enhancer also provides 40%+ of the recommended daily Vitamin D dose that most of of are deficient in due to sitting inside so often. To use GoHydrate just pour the pre-packaged stick into 20-24oz of water and drink. This is a great flavor enhancer if you are a person who needs to stay hydrated when you hate water.
I even love their motto “Water doesn’t have to be boring. But it does have to be consumed, so…” To check out GoHydrate I suggest ordering their mixed 10 stick sample box or their 30 stick sample box to see which flavor you like before stocking up on their 30 box sets of one flavor. My favorite flavors so far have been Lemon Citrus, Kiwi Strawberry, and Fruit Punch if you need a flavor recommendation to help you to drink more water.
2. Add in some fruit to stay hydrated when you hate water
Another old hack is flavoring your water with fruit! I like buying lemons and limes from my local grocery store and cutting them into wedges to squeeze into my water weekly. This is one of my favorite methods to hit my water goal and drink more water! In the summer I also experiment with other fruit that is in season such as berries, citrus, and watermelon for an extra fun water experience.
3. Eat some water to stay hydrated
Eating fruits and vegetables is a great way to stay hydrated by eating your water! This is a great hack when you are on the go and might be both hungry and thirsty (you also get in some nutrients)! Some fruits and vegetables are high in water content and can help you stay hydrated during the day such as:
- Watermelon
- Honeydew
- Cantaloupe
- Strawberries
- Pineapple
- Oranges
- Peaches
- Cucumbers
- Radish
- Bell peppers
- Tomatoes
- Broccoli
- Lettuce
- Zucchini
- Celery
4. Drink water first thing in the morning before your coffee to stay hydrated
I started using this hack about two years ago as a way to drink more water. The first thing I do before I eat or drink anything in the morning is drink a full serving of water to re-hydrate me from my sleep. This was a great way to fit in at least 20-30 oz. of water earlier in the day before you get ready and can re-hydrate you right off the bat before you drink your coffee or eat your first meal.
5. Set a daily water goal
I learned this hack at my gym to set a daily water goal so that you keep track of your water consumption pace. You take your weight and divide it by 2. That number is the amount of water you will set as a goal to drink in a day.
For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, 75 oz. will be your daily water goal. Having this goal in mind (no matter what you set) will also allow you to break up how much water you drink at different points in the day. You could divide 75 by 4 to be about 18.75 oz. of water 4 times daily. Looking at it this way makes it seem a lot less daunting to hit that water goal since you will be breaking it up as you go.
6. Drink a serving of water with every meal
Drinking a serving of water with every meal is a tip can really help help you to stay hydrated and drink more water if you are a person that likes to have a beverage with your meal. Add in your serving of water as a part of your meal so that you know that you will knock out a water serving while eating!
I typically will use a one-to-one rule (or more) with beverages at each meal. For example, if I’m drinking juice or a soda with a meal then I match the ounces of water to my drink of choice. This method helps you keep up with your water goal and keeps you hydrated with other drinks that might dehydrate you.
7. Invest in a great water bottle or tumbler to drink more water
I always use a tumbler or a water bottle as a way to drink more way and stay hydrated daily. I personally am a fan of cold water if I’m drinking water throughout the day. I prefer warm or hot water if I’m drinking water at night. In order to make my water consumption goal easier for the day I invested in a stainless steel water tumbler that holds about 30 oz. of water.
Using the previous tip from above I take the ounces from the bottle and calculate my daily water goal. This method proved to be very helpful and eliminated the need to track the different vessels I carried my water in daily. I was able to narrow it down to 4-5 servings of my 30 oz. tumbler daily which helped me to divide up my water tracking schedule as the day went by.
Another perk is that the stainless steel tumbler keeps your water cold for over 24 hours and it’s just pretty to look at it. Grab the water bottle I use here. If you aren’t as concerned about cold water during the day I recommend a Tervis Tumbler which is insulated and can just keep your drink at a stable temperature. Grab the Elephant tumbler I use on Amazon.
8. Water but make it bubbly! (to stay hydrated)
I’m a big fan of carbonated drinks in general (hello soda)! That also means that swapping in a sparkling water can help you hit your water goal. My favorites right now are Topo Chico which is a sparkling mineral water sourced from a spring in Mexico (it’s very refreshing)! But if I can’t get my hands on a Topo Chico I’ve been enjoying the Good and Gather Sparkling Water from Target, Bubly, or Original Seltzer from my local grocery store.
If you aren’t used to drinking bubbly water the unsweetened versions might seem odd to you at first but trust me they grow on you. Make sure you check the label to ensure that there are no added sweeteners or sodium in your sparkling or seltzer water.
9. Swap in an unsweetened tea for your water serving to stay hydrated
This is an old hack I use as a way to stay hydrated since tea is essentially flavored water. If you struggle with water in-take like me, try making a pitcher of unsweetened tea weekly and work your way through it for extra hydration. I fill up my insulated tumbler with unsweetened Green Tea or Starbucks Passion Tazo Tea and it is very refreshing. You really don’t even mind that it’s not sweetened!
Another great option is a new to me product from Cusa Tea. This brand was recommended to me by a friend who uses them while hiking. The best part is you don’t have to walk around with a wet tea bag once you prepare your tea.
The flavors Cusa Tea has are unreal. I started with their Iced or Hot Variety Pack and the flavors are so delicious, truly premium tea with no sugar or artificial ingredients. I’ve tried this both in iced and hot tea and they work great. They are not sweetened so if you like sweet tea I suggest adding a Truvia packet to lightly sweeten them. My favorite flavors so far have been Blueberry Chrysanthemum and Hibiscus Rose. They also offer a great variety pack so that you can find your favorite flavor.
10. Put a straw in your drink to drink more water
Putting a straw in your drink is an underrated way to stay hydrated and drink more water. About two years ago I invested in a glass straw set from Amazon and I’m never going back. These straws are make it simple to sip up water when I’m on the go or just sitting at home (trying to hit that water goal!). They are also super easy to clean and (bonus!). Something about drinking from a glass straw also feels luxurious and allows me to consume more water throughout the day.
